Rhodes Wildlife

We had an exciting afternoon on the street today. On our way for an afternoon walk, we could hear a loud chittering. I thought it was an indignent squirrel, but as we headed up the street, a crowd of neighbours were standing on the road, looking up at a baby racoon stranded on a roof.

It appears that the racoon had fallen out of the nest (inside the eaves of the house) and was stuck on the roof of the porch. The mother made a couple of attempts to get down to the lost member of her brood, but was intimidated by all the humans standing around watching!

An enterprising neighbour brought out a lanudry basket lined with towels. Someone stood on the porch underneath the baby (who was scrabbling around in the eavestrough) and held up the basket. Baby slowly dropped to the relative safety of the basket.

The basket was left on the lawn, and baby hunkered down to wait for Mom to collect him!
